Baby yoga is a beautiful way to celebrate your growing baby. It offers your baby lots of opportunities to stretch out and enjoy the freedom of movement and interaction both with you and the other babies in the group.
It is a wonderful progression from baby massage as we invite the babies to be more involved and aware of their movements. It is a lively and fun class with numerous health benefits for baby and mother, as we do lots of stretches aimed at relieving stress in the mother’s body also.
New motherhood is a special time but it can also be physically and emotionally demanding. Baby yoga is a great way to bond with your baby while getting back in shape. Practicing yoga with your baby encourages a loving mother baby interaction.
“We found the stretches for both of us were great and really enjoyed the songs. Noeleen made the class very relaxing and we loved going each week.”
Group classes take place at Avellana, which is on the first floor (Yes, there is a lift!). Classes are designed to be small – there are usually a maximum of 6 - 8 mums and their babies at a baby yoga class.
When you arrive, the room is set up with yoga mats and fresh blankets and cushions. All oils and handouts are provided.
Each class is “baby led” – you are free to tend to your baby in anyway throughout the duration of the class (you can feed, change and comfort your baby as you feel necessary, or get up and have a walk around). Only you know what suits your baby.
A typical class includes baby yoga and massage for overall strengthening and development. There is a balance of stretching and relaxing sequences. Songs and rhymes are co coordinated with some of the movements.
Postnatal yoga is included for mums and each class finishes with a joint relaxation for parent and baby.
Many of the yoga poses involve the core area which helps to tone these muscles and restore strength after pregnancy. We also focus a lot on relieving tension in areas such as the neck, shoulders and back as many new mums find feeding and lifting baby can lead to tiredness in these areas.
In the class we also practice breathing exercises and relaxation techniques which help to replenish lost energy.
As in baby massage, when your baby is relaxed and content, you can enjoy a cup of a fresh coffee/tea and cake in the company of other mums and babies. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to enjoy a well-deserved break and a chance to meet new friends and share support and wisdom, let off steam, have a laugh and swap stories.
Courses run over 5 consecutive weeks.
Classes last for 1½ hours, which includes instruction followed by tea and coffee.
Parents have the opportunity to meet others, going through a similar stage of parenting.
The cost of the course is €90 which includes a spiral-bound book detailing all the moves and songs we use in the class, tea/coffee and healthy home-baked treats.
*Please note: For all mums & babies who have attended baby massage, it is €80 for the 5 weeks.
Dress yourself and your baby comfortably for the class.
“I really enjoyed the time together and the tea and chat with other mums. The hand outs were very useful for home and allowed other members of the family to get involved. The breathing exercises and stretches were great.”
